How many CDs did you buy last year?

Mar 19

From Ars Technica: 17 million people stopped buying CDs in 2008.

I made exactly one CD purchase: the two-disc set of Sasha’s Invol2ver, and only after I had tried every website I knew. All of the other music I bought was downloaded.

The last CD I purchased was in the December of 2002

If I had to guess, I’d say I bought 50 CDs last year, and downloaded 1 full album, and maybe 7 other songs (mostly one-offs that my band was learning, and I needed the track for reference).

Being a music geek, I just can’t bring myself to do the “download thing” for music, with the rare exception noted above. I prefer having the liner notes, the lyrics, seeing who worked on the albums, looking at the artwork, reading the “special thanks” section and so on. And besides, my iTunes drive has already died once, having all the real CDs acts as a nice backup. :)

I bought 10-15 albums from physical stores in 2008. Like Nolan I tend to enjoy the music and the “stuff” that comes packaged with CDs. Plus, I like to control the bitrate of the music I import. As storage space gets bigger and cheaper I begin to import at higher bitrates.

I do purchase music online from time to time. Most of these purchases are from Amazon. If Amazon doesn’t have the record I’ll buy from iTunes. Target is where I spend most of my music dollars though.
