Can’t wait for image manipulation in CFMX8/Scorpio? Do it now!

One of the major buzzes at MAX (or so I heard) was the upcoming image manipulation features in CFMX8/Scorpio. It seems that everyone is happy to see this, as existing image manipulation solutions for CF just aren’t good enough. I say “bah humbug” to that. I’ve just finished the core of a site that does some pretty impressive (IMHO) image manipulation, and it only took an evening of coding to throw together.

For example, how about a color-coded map of the world that shows visitor traffic? global traffic

Or, if you can ignore my horrible graphic design skills, how about a dashboard for NaNoWriMo progress?

nanograph, dashboard version

Or, another image running off of the exact same query:

nanograph, dashboard version

I’m not trying to brag, just to show that you don’t have to wait for Scorpio to do really impressive stuff in CF with images. Everything you are supposedly going to be able to do in Scorpio, you can do right now. That includes dynamic text and shapes, resizing, alpha blending, rotations and transformations, bitmap layering, gradients, etc, etc, etc.

I’m going to do a series of posts that detail how I did what I did, and how you can do it just as easily. For those of you that can’t wait, the SVN repository for the site is available now.
