I ended up running a little farther than I had intended, and I know I’m going to feel it tomorrow, but it was still a good run. I set up my bottle 4 mi out this time, which worked out well. I like being able to hit it twice, and I think it’s more effective that way than just having it at the half-way point. Today I tried Hammer’s Heed, and it worked out well enough. The flavor (Mandarin Orange) wasn’t overpowering, nor too sweet. Good deal. Apparently, it’s just a liquid form of their gel packs, and thus only usable for up to two-hour runs, so I need to poke around and see if anyone local carries their Perpetuem line.
I cannot believe I maintained a 9:26 pace for over 90 minutes. I had no idea I could do that. Again, it’s certainly not Olympic-level, but it’s not half bad for a coder-geek.
UPDATE
I did a bit of math:
$ 0.0073 | cost per kcal of a Burrito Bol |
11.5 | distance run, in miles |
1,525 | kcal spent running |
$ 11.20 | cost for enough Bols to replenish lost kcal |
$ 1.49 | cost per 20 oz serving of Heed |
$ 1.25 | cost per 32 oz Vitamin Water |
$ 1.99 | cost per 1 pkg Clif Shot Bloks |
$ 1.25 | cost per Hammer Gel |
$ 2.24 | cost in gas for drive to bottle |
$ 19.42 | total cost of run |
Each of these long weekend runs costs me no less than $20, not including the amortized cost of the inevitable knee surgery if I continue the sport long-term. I’m not sure how to feel about that.
